UNDER THE SKIN

We are proud to announce that Cinespia is working with The Ace Hotel Downtown LA to present films in the gorgeous United Artists Theatre, a 1920s movie palace. Closed to the public for decades, join us as we marvel at it’s soaring gold ceiling, cathedral columns and towering lobby.

Our first event is the Los Angeles premiere of Under the Skin the new sci-fi thriller starring Scarlett Johanssen and directed by Jonathan Glazer (Sexy Beast, Birth). Surreal, sexy and downright terrifying, the film’s story is told obliquely, heightening the feeling of an other-wordly horror with a brilliant avant music score and spectacularly unusual special effects completing the atmosphere. Scarlett plays an alien visitor disguised in human skin preying on men in her most genuinely daring performance.

Director Jonathan Glazer  will be in-person to discuss the making of this sci-fi masterpiece. Co-presented by Cinefamily. See the trailer here:  http://vimeo.com/86430658

VALLEY OF THE DOLLS

Join us in your pastel suits and lamé gowns for this pill popping classic — one of the ultimate indulgent doses of Sixties Mod fashion on film, wrapped up in the soapiest of manic melodramas!

Take in one of the ultimate indulgent doses of Sixties Mod fashion on film, Amongst over 100 incredible, eye-popping costume changes, starlets Sharon Tate, Patty Duke and Barbara Parkins run headfirst into the perils of booze, pills (aka those titular “dolls”), fame and attitude-heavy men on their way to the top of the cutthroat showbiz ladder. Based on the wildly popular novel by pop sensationalist Jacqueline Susann, Valley of the Dolls is the most outrageous (and thoroughly entertaining) entry in the grand “young women making it big in the big city” movie tradition. In truth, the real star of the movie is famous fashion designer “Travilla”: after a storied life dressing movie icons like Marilyn Monroe and Lauren Bacall, one of the artist’s career-crowning achievements was the non-stop parade of off-the-charts, “Big Sixties” pastel ‘n sequined gear that rains down on Valley of the Dolls like Niagara Falls. – See more at: http://www.cinefamily.org/films/dress-up/#dress-up-valley-of-the-dolls

Cinespia Salon: The Wild World of TVTV

See Bill Murray crash the Oscars, in some of the wildest and funniest footage of the 70s!

Before “The Daily Show,” This is Spinal Tap and Heavy Metal Parking Lot – there was TVTV.

Radical, hilarious and influential, “Top Value Television” was a guerilla video collective who pioneered the use of portable, low-tech video gear, the small size and unusual nature of which allowed them unprecedented access to crash everything from presidential conventions, to the Oscars and the Super Bowl.

Their philosophy was to use their entertaining, eye-opening work as a means to break free from the stranglehold mainstream broadcasting had on American culture — and, as this salon will prove, they accomplished that goal with every single production they ever created.

To celebrate TVTV the evening features a reunion of TVTV members, with founder Allen Rucker and friends. After they entertain us with stories from back in the day we’ll watch a smorgasboard of TVTV works (featuring members like Bill Murray, Lily Tomlin, Chris Guest and Howard Hesseman!). This is going to be a fun night, don’t miss it!

TITANIC

(Directed by James Cameron, 1997, 194 mins)
The Los Angeles Theatre is our city’s most gorgeous and spectacular movie palace, a hidden gem rarely open to the public. Opened in 1931, the theatre is the most opulent ever imagined, with soaring ceilings, breath-taking chandeliers, gold leaf angels, and a cascading crystal fountain.

This Valentine’s day set sail with us as we watch Kate and Leo on the the very, very big screen. Sip champagne beneath floating chandeliers, wander through the enormous echoing ballroom, or explore the mirrored ladies powder room and the murals of the children’s nursery. A photo booth downstairs will capture the evening with you and your sweetheart. With four full bars, this screening is 21 and over, fancy dress for women and JACKET AND TIE ARE REQUIRED FOR MEN.
